Chelsea sign Geovany Quenda, beating Manchester United to the deal
Chelsea have secured the signing of a highly talented young star, Geovany Quenda, according to talkSPORT. The Blues have outbid Manchester United for the player’s services and reached an agreement with Sporting CP to acquire him.
The 17-year-old Quenda will remain with Sporting CP for the upcoming season before joining Chelsea in the summer of 2026. Chelsea is expected to pay around £42 million for the youngster, who has signed a contract until 2033.
Manchester United was also interested in signing Quenda and was close to finalizing a similar deal. The player had previously worked under manager Ruben Amorim before moving to Old Trafford. However, Chelsea managed to outmaneuver their rivals.
Quenda has already undergone a medical examination with Chelsea but will continue his development at Sporting CP, where he is considered a vital member of the first team. He has already made 43 appearances for the Portuguese club, including 10 in the Champions League.
Initially starting as a winger, Quenda progressed into a wing-back under Amorim’s guidance. However, under new boss Rui Borges, he has returned to his original role. Equipped with a left foot, Quenda can play on either flank and also operate in central positions, using his speed to trouble defenders.
This signing highlights Chelsea’s commitment to acquiring and nurturing the best young talents globally. Quenda’s decision to choose Chelsea may have been influenced by the club’s successful campaign this season, with the team currently sitting in fourth place in the Premier League and on track to secure a spot in the Champions League next year.
On the other hand, Manchester United finds themselves in 14th place in the league and is banking on winning the Europa League to secure European qualification. Having defeated Real Sociedad over two legs, United will face a tough challenge in the quarter-finals against Lyon.
