Coventry met Swansea in 1981 and emerged victorious with a 2-0 win
Frank Lampard’s management has led Coventry to their first win against Swansea since 1981, giving a boost to their unlikely chances of making it to the playoffs. Ellis Simms and Brandon Thomas-Asante scored first half goals, securing a perfect afternoon for the Coventry team during their visit to Wales.
Under Lampard’s tutelage, Coventry has now won their last four league matches. This achievement is the first of its kind since November 2022 for the club. Lampard has performed extraordinarily well with the Sky Blues lately, taking charge of the team in November. When Lampard took over, Coventry was in a relegation battle, sitting in 17th place, just two points above the drop zone.
However, within two months, the team has managed to secure a comfortable lead of 14 points above the bottom three and is now unexpectedly aiming for a top-six spot. Coventry is currently placed 11th in the league table, merely three points behind West Brom, who occupies the last play-off position.
The victory against Swansea has brought an end to the 44-year long wait for Coventry fans. In their previous encounters, Coventry had suffered eight losses to Swansea and earned ten draws. Moreover, Coventry had failed to win any of their last 12 away trips to Swansea, drawing and losing six times each.
During their recent encounter with the Swans, Coventry fans had plenty to cheer about. In the 17th minute, Simms broke the deadlock, scoring his fourth Championship goal of the season. Thomas-Asante provided a low cross to Simms, who skillfully controlled the ball before volleying it into the net.
Just before half-time, Thomas-Asante further extended the visitors’ lead with a remarkable goal. He capitalized on a loose ball nearly 40 yards from the goal and chipped it over an unsuspecting Lawrence Vigouroux.
Coventry’s attention now turns towards their upcoming match against league leaders Leeds, which will be played on home soil next Wednesday night. Following that, the team will face Ipswich in the FA Cup fourth round, with hopes of reaching Wembley once again after last season’s semi-final loss to Manchester United.
